We live in a world where change is a constant, and it’s vital that we keep up to date and growing.  Gone are the days when a certificate of this or a stamp of approval for that, held any weight as we’ve become tech savvy and time smart, adapting not only to our working environment but also to how we spend our time away from work, in our pursuit of success.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the term used to describe self-directed planned maintenance, development, and enhancement of skills, knowledge, personal and professional identity, opinions and proficiencies through independent, participation-based, interactive, formal, or informal learning.

Practically anything which can further your knowledge and skills is classed as CPD.

Professional bodies and regulators require their members to engage in CPD activities to maintain their license to practice or professional qualifications, but it would be incorrect to think that CPD is only for the few. CPD is for everyone, no matter where on the path they may be and research, suggests that 70% of workers cited lack of training opportunities as the reason they wouldn’t stay in their current role or consider taking on a new role in the same company. Internationally employers are becoming aware of the substantial benefits of actively engaging their staff in CPD activities and developing a thriving, committed, passionate workforce.

CPD has an increasingly international reputation as the strongest currency in professional development.

The CPD framework encourages individuals to:

  • Identify what they want to learn,
  • Participate in a learning experience of their choice, and
  • Reflect on their learning in relation to identified personal and professional goals, targets, or competences.

CPD shows a clear commitment to self-development
